We recently shared some thoughts from a Michigan farmer on our Facebook page, describing the harsh conditions that drive many farmers out of business. It clearly struck a chord with many of our supporters. Over 1,200 people have t read it so far. It captures so many of the reasons we are motivated to bring a co-op to McHenry County, so we feel compelled to share it again here to make sure no one misses out on this powerful message. We hope you’ll take a few minutes to read it.
This story is all too common for small farmers, but we don't think it has to be the case where we live. Grocery co-ops are uniquely positioned to provide a stable market for local farmers and food artisans. No, we probably won't match prices of $1.50 for a gallon of milk, but we can offer a fair price for the food produced by hard-working local families—people you know and can trust to produce healthy, fresh, delicious food.
Do you want to help protect local farms in your community? Let's get a grocery store open that is committed to making it easier for you to buy local food from local farms. Become a Food Shed Co-op owner and help make it happen.
Women’s Wellness Expo
We’re thrilled to be part of this free community event benefiting Girls on the Run. Join hundreds of local women on April 10 for a evening of education, inspiration, and fun. Learn about wellness products and services available throughout the area and hear from local experts on how to enhance your wellness: physical and emotional health, relationships, and finances. There will be raffle prizes and plenty of opportunities to socialize and network. We hope to see you there!
Earth Day Celebration
Join us at this family-friendly event hosted by the McHenry County Conservation District and the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County, where you’ll enjoy musical entertainment, guided hikes, an open mic, and food truck refreshments. The event is both indoors and outdoors, so we’ll be there rain or shine! Make sure you stop by our table to say hello and play our seed-matching game.
Goat Yoga: Come Kid Around with Us!
You may have seen the viral videos of this hot new yoga trend; now you can experience it for yourself! Join us at Terra Vitae Farms on April 28 for a fun and relaxing afternoon. You’ll enjoy a yoga class led by Katie O’Shaughnessy of Akasha Yoga, surrounded by adorable baby goats. No yoga (or goat!) experience required, so sign up with a friend and cross this unique experience off your bucket list.
Spring Volunteer Orientations
We’re closer than ever to securing and announcing our location, so it’s a perfect time to jump in and help us make it happen. Find out about our volunteer needs, chat about where you can get plugged in, and get some basic training. We’ll be at Ethereal Confections on Tuesday, May 8th and Crystal Lake Brewing on Monday, May 14. RSVP so we can save seats and prepare materials for everyone in advance.
